What is dialysis?

The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste products from the blood. Dialysis is a procedure that is a substitute for many of the normal duties of the kidneys. The kidneys are two organs located on either side of the back of the abdominal cavity. Dialysis can allow individuals to live productive and useful lives, even though their kidneys no longer work adequately. In the United States, there are over 200,000 people who use dialysis techniques on an ongoing basis.

Dialysis helps the body by performing the functions of failed kidneys. The kidney has many roles. An essential job of the kidney is to regulate the body's fluid balance. It does this by adjusting the amount of urine that is excreted on a daily basis. On hot days, the body sweats more. Thus, less water needs to be excreted through the kidneys. On cold days, the body sweats less. Thus, urine output needs to be greater in order to maintain the proper balance within the body. It is the kidney's job to regulate fluid balance by adjusting urine output.

Another major duty of the kidney is to remove the waste products that the body produces throughout the day. As the body functions, the cells use energy. The operation of the cells produces waste products that must be removed from the body. When these waste products are not removed adequately, they build up in the body. An elevation of waste products, as measured in the blood, is called "azotemia." When waste products accumulate they, cause a sick feeling throughout the body called "uremia."

Great Pianist to Play in CdO

It’s a rare treat when great artists come to the provinces for concert. German pianist Peter von Wienhardt will play at Rodelsa Hall as part of their annual series of concerts. Music of Haydn, Piazolla, Liszt and Gershwin will be featured in the programme.

This diverse repertoire allows for a most unique musical experience. Few artists dare to venture to more than three different musical styles. In this case it’s not only varied music, but the best of the representative pieces of their respective styles.

For example, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue will be featured, along with Liszt’s Mefisto Waltz.

These are indeed the pinnacle of the composer’s output. Interestingly, also featured will be a Piazolla work. It will be recalled how the Trio Con Brio which played in beginning of September this year, introduced some Piazolla in their program.

Piazolla, being an Argentinian Tango composer of the 20th Century, will be arranged for solo piano by Wienhardt himself. This will be a real treat for classical music aficionados and the new audiences.

Biography Significant Events

Peter von Wienhardt was born in 1966 in Budapest and had his first piano lesson at the age of four. His family immigrated to Germany in 1975. From 1984 onwards, he studied at the State University of Music and Performing Arts (Musikhochschule) in Stuttgart and completed his studies there in 1992 in the class of Oleg Maisenberg. He received important impulses for his compositional activities from Prof. Ulrich Süße and Gheorghe Costinescu. Further musical impressions and influences were formed through master classes with Georges Cziffra, Werner Scholz, György Sebök and György Kurtág, to name but a few.

Peter von Wienhardt won numerous national and international competitions, including the Freinsheim Piano Competition, the Bartók Competition in Budapest, the Liszt Competition “George Cziffra” in Paris, and he was twice scholarship and prize winner of the “Deutscher Musikrat”.

Peter von Wienhardt has been active in teaching master classes from a young age. Alongside his chamber music teaching capacity at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, he is also responsible for various projects as conductor of the chamber orchestra and other ensembles there. Since 2002, von Wienhardt has been leading an annual festival in southern Sweden (Mellby Sommerkonzerte), always with high-profile and distinguished performers. In his home city of Münster, he is responsible, together with Prof. Dr. Joachim Dorfmüller, for the established Grieg Festival Münster, and in 2010, for the first time as artistic director of theAaseerenade, the first open air crossover festival in Germany.

For many years, von Wienhardt has been travelling the world in various capacities, including that of pianist, conductor, composer and chamber musician. He regularly has guest appearances in Asia and South America and has performed in the most renowned concert halls worldwide. His particular passion for travel and the exotic has resulted in a particularly enjoyable career and he often combines his visits with extended cultural exchanges in the various different regions.

The number of his CD productions as a soloist, chamber musician and composer, increases year by year. The CD production with Arabella Steinbacher, violin, with the label Orfeo, was honoured with the ECHO KLASSIK award in 2007. In January 2009, the world premiere recording of Sven Ingo Koch’s harpsichord concerto was released. Alongside his artistic activities, Peter von Wienhardt devotes his energies to the pedagogical communication of music. A good example is his participation in the piano master classes of the Bundesakademie für musikalische Jugendbildung Trossingen, which he has helped organize since September 2010. As a conductor, von Wienhardt has also followed his own unique path; his declared goal is to “serve” the orchestra, and help it perform to the highest possible standard.

Peter von Wienhardt has also devoted the past few years to reaching new artistic heights. He has composed, amongst other works, two violin concertos (dedicated to Koh Gabriel Kameda), a cello concerto (world premiere on 24.6.2010 with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, Nicolas Altstaedt, violoncello), a piano quintet (commissioned by “Compania”, 2009), a chamber opera (“Der Nachhilfeschüler”) and the piano quintet “Hollywood-Suite” (world premiere 02/2009). An opera with an original libretto by Martin Konietschke is currently in the making.

Peter von Wienhardt’s greatest passion is for musical “underdogs”. He looks for new, unheard material that he hopes to introduce to potential audiences through his manner of playing and insightful explanations. His musical focus in 2010 is therefore not only Franz Schubert, but also the composers Johann N. Hummel and Isaac Albeniz. In 2010, von Wienhardt was appointed Professor of Piano and Crossover at the Musikhochschule Münster, a faculty of the Westfalian Wilhelms-University.

Gil Macaibay III
The Fashion Designer
in Cagayan de Oro City

Wedding Gowns by Gil Macaibay III

Reluctant no more, Gil Macaibay III is now ready to showcase his design talents on the national stage. Being one of the featured designers on Luxewear Night on October 22 is a giant leap of faith for this highly motivated designer.
Wedding Gowns by Gil Macaibay III
Though a huge name in Northern Mindanao, Macaibay is a relative unknown in Manila, the epicenter of Philippine Fashion. All that will change as he set his sights on a scale much bigger than his comfort zone in Cagayan de Oro City. Encouraged by mentors such as Renee Salud, Barge Ramos, Dong Omaga-Diaz and Frederick Peralta, Macaibay is now gearing for the big leagues.

He is now an active participant in the bi-annual Philippine Fashion Week, showcasing his strength as a designer of classy womenswear and putting twists on club menswear.

“I was able to watch the one Fashion Week. From then on, I was encouraged to join the next edition. Honestly, it was Frederick Peralta who convinced me to join, and the extreme influence and support of my friends seem ego-boosting enough for me to take the plunge,” tension and resolve evident in his voice.

Patience and continuous research as well as loving your craft, Macaibay knows, are the essentials in running a fashion business. He has dressed all of the city’s beauties such as Miss Teen Philippines Maxine Monasterio, local politicos, supermodel Jasmine Maierhofer, Muslim royalty and the Mindanao elite.

For three years in a row, Macaibay has dressed Cagayan de Oro’s most beautiful women in the annual Miss Kagay-an competition. He also ardently participates in prestigious trade shows such as Kasal.com. Macaibay also stages fashion shoots and fashion spectacles that benefit worthy causes that he heartily supports such as “Doctors on the Runway I and II”, which benefited cancer patients, and a Bi-Annual Gala Show for Street Children of Agora.

“During my high-school years at Xavier University, fashion as a career seemed inevitable. The fad and the colors of the eighties ignited everyone’s interest to be fashionably in,” he recalls. “I personally love Vivienne Westwood. I’m more into the haute couture aesthetic. I love doing more exciting creations. And I’m passionately mastering and polishing my craft.”

Center for Voice Opens in Oro

CAGAYANONS looking for a very good venue where they can hone their talents in singing can fret no more as the Center for Voice will open today to make their dreams come true.

The Center for Voice was conceptualized many years ago by a very talented singer who hails from Cagayan de Oro -- Roy Edward Sinco - who saw the potentials of Cagayanons in all areas of music.
He, being a singer, dreamt of developing young individuals to becoming singing ambassadors, which he used to be one - singing in key cities of America; spreading messages of hope, peace and Christian love through songs. He also dreamt of making voice as an effective instrument to wash away the dusts of everyday life from the souls of adults.

After years of singing professionally here and in the international scenes, Roy finally decided to make his dreams a reality.

Roy, a product of Ryan Cayabyab, Center for Pop and the Conservatory School of Music (PWU), and Ferdinand Velez Batar, his long-time friend and a fresh graduate of MBA from Xavier University who wishes to practice his business acumen in his hometown, forged a formidable team.

The two envisioned a Center for Excellence in Voice Culture in Mindanao where locals can have their talents honed.

With the Center for Voice, talented Cagayanons need not go to Manila to train in schools with quality programs as Cagayan de Oro is proud to have this Center which offers programs at par, if not better, since the team has created an approach that is both scientific and technical - a fusion of Roy's formal trainings, professional experiences and Advanced Materials in vocal mastery.

With these programs, interested individuals not only in Cagayan de Oro but also elsewhere in Mindanao can have the chance to get quality training and become powerhouse singers.

Because of the Center's unique and first-of-a-kind programs, other well-known local artists wanted to be a part of it. Roy Cosing (Keyboardist) and Bebs Vasquez (Classical Guitarist) agreed to hold classes in Piano and Guitar in this very cozy and state-of-the-art Music Center.

Alas! Cagayan de Oro has another new and first of its kind. Something that Cagayanons can be proud of.

The Center for Voice will have its grand opening today, November 10, 5:00 p.m. at the 2nd floor of Gabor-Velez Bldg. in Kauswagan, this city, near Kong Hua School.

First 3D cinema in CdO to open on November 13

Cagayanons will finally experience the first digital 3D cinema in the city when SM Digital Theater will open its doors to the public on November 13 at SM City Cagayan de Oro.

Earn Php1.04M per Year with this Great Investment!

SM Cinema will showcase Avatar 3D during the launching of their first 3D Cinema here in Cagayan de Oro on November 13, 2010, Saturday. Be there at the SM City Cinema 1 on the opening day of SM Cagayan de Oro’s first digital theater. Watch Avatar 3D and be ready for this very exciting experience.

The digital experience is the new approach to enjoy movies. It is a set of equipment consisting of a digital camera projector, sound system, server, storage, delivery mechanism and security processes as defined by the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI), an organization established in March 2002 as a joint venture of the biggest names in the movie industry like Disney, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. Studios to establish and document voluntary specifications for digital theaters to ensure a uniform and high level of technical performance, reliability and quality control.

A digitally produced or digitally converted movie can be distributed to theaters via satellite, physical media, or fiber optic networks. The digitized movie is stored by a computer/server which “serves” it to a digital projector for each screening of the movie.

SM Digital Theaters use real silver-screens to ensure high-quality light reflection to give you the brightest colors and sharpest pictures.

The SM Digital Theater technology delivers razor-sharp and life-like images for the ultimate in picture quality. Digital theater technology delivers a true digital picture with incredible clarity and vibrant colors every show by casting a range of up 35 million colors; a feat that can never be equaled by any ordinary movie film.

With the SM Cinema’s digital theater technology color fading, jumping and film scratching become obsolete concepts. The SM Digital Theater offers a consistent image with no degradation over time. Difference between Digital 3D and IMAX

First, there are actually 2 types of IMAX – the normal gigantic IMAX where the screens are projected on humongous screens, and the digital 3d cinema where the screen size is normal, but the images actually look sharper because it is digitally rendered.

In other countries, these 2 IMAX types are priced the same, and some patrons have actually complained. They see the small digital screen and, although it’s in 3D, feel cheated since they expect an IMAX theater to be the gigantic screens they’ve been reading about. The result: they called the smaller IMAX “digital 3d“.

Here in the Philippines, SM never branded their Cinema 1s as IMAX technology. A great deal that comes out of this – the digital 3d theater actually priced lower than the normal IMAX, even as it delivers BETTER quality!

So what’s the difference? – JUST THE SIZE OF THE SCREEN.

Starbucks Cagayan de Oro NOW Brewing

Starbucks Coffee indeed has finally opened its first branch in Mindanao last October 30 in Cagayan de Oro City.

Strategically located at the former Parking A of Limketkai Center, just across McDonalds and Missy BonBon, the world’s most popular coffee shop opened  new opportunities for locals to have taste of the world’s best coffee (according to Starbucks). Some say their coffee is a little bit pricey, but hey, there’s no harm in trying it just once in your lifetime.

Famous firsts in Starbucks Philippines
Michael Ray

LUZON. The first Starbucks in the Philippines opened in the island of Luzon where the nation's capital is located. It was in December 4, 1997 that the Philippines had its first Starbucks experience in Metro Manila specifically at 6750 Ayala Building, Makati. Aside from coffee, it then became the favorite place for people to chat, study, and the perfect place to find freshly baked pastries.

VISAYAS. Cebu had the first taste of Starbucks in Visayas. It was in 2003 that Ayala Center Cebu became the haven of the Cebuano coffee lovers.

MINDANAO. Starbucks invaded the Mindanao soil last October 30, 2010 through the Golden Heart of Asia... Cagayan de Oro. Specifically situated in Limketkai Center, Mindanao now has another place for the coffee drinkers and the fashionable gossipers who happen to talk about the latest intrigues in coffee shops.

Metro Manila for Luzon, Metro Cebu for Visayas, and Cagayan de Oro for Mindanao... These three major cities are the famous firsts for Starbucks Philippines. Their people are now enjoying the expertly made and the world's most trusted brand of coffee. After all, nothing beats a tall Starbucks treat.

Budget for Mindanao railway out soon

THE long-overdue Mindanao Railway project will finally be realized through the efforts of Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez (2nd district).

Rodiguez, who authored House Bill 1855, which calls for the creation of the Mindanao Railways Corporation and for funds for its operation, said that by 2011, at least $1 billion will be released by foreign investors from Germany or China in time for the project's initial construction.

He said Congress has approved his bill and the money is now being released for the railway project to continue its operation.

"The ongoing project is expected to be finished sooner but not in time for the Laguindingan International Airport, which is about to be finished," Rodriguez said.

He said contractors will not rush the billion-dollar project as they will make sure that it will be state-of-the-art and one of its kind in Mindanao.

Rodriguez said they are already in the process of doing civil works, where they will pay lot owners and the indigenous people for the road right of way.

"This project is expected to cut off travel time within different cities in Mindanao by at least 50 percent aside from providing comfort to passengers. No hassles," Rodriguez said.

The feasibility study of the Mindanao Railway project started in 2003 and Rodriguez said they hope to finish it before his term ends.

The Mindanao Railway project is estimated to cost P66.5 billion (US$1.33 billion) and would be implemented in four phases with the initial route to start from Laguindingan and end in Cagayan de Oro City. It aims to cut the present 90-minute bus travel time between Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City to just about 15 to 20 minutes.

The railway is expected to link urban centers like Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Zamboanga, Pagadian, Dipolog, Marawi, Cotabato and Davao. ()
